“We are living through a period in time in which entrepreneurs of a certain type are being worshipped like heroes,” says Angela Giovine, host of the Extra/Ordinary Small Business podcast. “Startups that receive millions, if not billions, of dollars across multiple rounds of funding, are glorified in the media and on television shows. Often the entrepreneur or the startup is revered for the size of the funding rather than its revenue number or its contribution to the market or to society. To me, this is a mistake. Our country is home to 27.9 million small businesses. These small, local businesses employ neighbors, contribute to the community and provide unique value. And yet, our society often misplaces its admiration, overlooking these small business heroes. Each small business is a unique story of struggle, commitment, and perseverance. I have had the honor and the pleasure of knowing so many of them over my time as a small business owner, and I can’t wait to share these stories. The time has come to elevate the small business owner.”
