Veterans-DayThough World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28th, 1919, the fighting ended seven months prior when an armistice went into effect between the Allied Nations and Germany on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and thus Veterans Day was born.

Now on November 11th each year we take the time to honor the many men and women who fought so hard in that war, all the wars since, and those are still defending our freedom today.  Hunterdon County, we are proud to say, is home to nearly 7,000 brave men and woman and their families who sacrificed so much to ensure our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  Here are just a few ways we can celebrate, honor, and serve our Hunterdon County veterans.

HONOR our Veterans by helping to make sure they all receive proper recognition

In 2002 a Hunterdon County Veterans Recognition Medal was commissioned by the Board of Chosen Freeholders.  It was designed by Hunterdon County resident and Vietnam War Veteran, John N. Hatzikalfas.  Since the last formal Medals Ceremony, in 2009, 1,400 veterans have received the honor however, there are many more in our area that the Board would like to take the time to appreciate.  This year, 2014, the 300th Anniversary of the founding of Hunterdon County the Board held a ceremony on August 20th to honor those veterans that have not yet received their medal which reads “We Shall Never Forget”.

If you are or know a Veteran in Hunterdon County you are encouraged to fill out an application for the Hunterdon County Veterans Recognition Medal which are available at the County Administration office, 71 Main Street in Flemington.  Visit the website for more information.

SERVE our Veterans by lending a helping hand

The men and women who protect our country go through so many mental and physical trials to do so, and in many cases can use our help.  Whether that help comes from volunteering to spend the day with a disabled or elderly veteran or donating money to one of the many charitable causes every effort makes a difference and is a great way to serve this Veterans Day.  To find out more on Hunterdon’s Veterans services visit their website.
