As part of the “Favorite Small Town in Hunterdon County” contest, we’re shining a spotlight on the amazing towns that make up Hunterdon County and some of the fantastic organizations located within them.

Each region offers a distinct downtown district with shopping, dining, and recreational activities just a short walk away – from the vibrant business district in Flemington to Clinton’s scenic Red Mill Museum Village to the galleries and boutiques of Lambertville and everything in between. One historic, tight-knit Hunterdon County community is Stockton, New Jersey.

A town of many names – Stockton was first known as Reading Ferry, Howell’s Ferry, Centre Bridge Station and late Stockton with the creation of a local post office and railroad station in 1853. The town was ultimately named in honor of U.S. Senator Robert Field Stockton, who was instrumental in the creation of the Delaware and Raritan Canal. The quaint town remains largely unchanged from it’s roots, with buildings like The Stockton Inn and Prallsville Mills dating back to the 18th century.

The Prallsville Mills is home to historic buildings and scenic riverside grounds. The complex includes a historic Grist Mill- a sprawling stone building with milling machines and delightful architectural details- the Saw Mill –  which has existed intermittently on the site since 1750 – the The Prall House – built in 1790 as the home of John Prall Jr., who served as a lieutenant in the American Revolution – and The 1850 River House. Check out upcoming events at Prallsville – which range from 5Ks to poetry readings to concerts – here.

River Valley Realty is donating $500 to one local charity representing the winning “small town” and the Prallsville Mills will be granted the donation if Stockton, New Jersey takes top honors. If you’d like to cast a vote for Stockton as your favorite town in Hunterdon County, you can do so through September 30, 2017 here.
