Former career firefighter and Medal of Valor awardee, Anthony Torlish of Distinctive Detailing, who took up detailing after suffering a career-ending on-the-job-injury, is making his third trip to Seattle’s Museum of Flight this week, July 13-18, as a member of the elite Air Force One Detailing Team. Certified and trained as a mentor by Master automotive and aircraft detailer, Renny Doyle of Detailing Success, the team has been caring for the SAM (Special Air Missions) 970 for the past decade. The AFO’s Boeing 707-120 was a flying Oval Office for four U.S. Presidents including Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon; and entertained many international VIPs such as Nikita Khrushchev and Henry Kissinger.

Doyle appointed Torlish Team Leader last year and Quality Control Manager this year over the 30-man handpicked team consisting primarily of retired military veterans, firefighters, EMT, and law enforcement officers, who have found highly successful careers as high-end paint correction specialists.

Torlish is also a member of the network’s vaunted Detail Mafia, and one of four New Jersey detailers known as the infamous “Jersey Crew”: Harry Sandwith of Dirty Harry’s Detailing in Rochelle Park; Bob Wiener of Finer Detail in West Long Branch, and Frank Bottini of Armourshield Auto Spa in Voorhees.
The team will also spruce up a 787 Dreamliner. Both planes live outdoors on the tarmac and suffer greatly from Seattle’s torrential climate. The museum is currently building a covered outdoor hangar for AFO as the team moves into a preservation versus restoration mode of maintenance.

“To be a part of such a significant project as preserving Air Force One, that beautiful icon of our country’s aviation heritage and history, is still exciting for me even after three years,” says Torlish. “I will never tire of preserving a piece of our country’s history and it is an honor to share this unique opportunity with other vets, cops, firemen, and a variety of civil servants across the country.”
