A you a techie or innovator looking to explore, share, and grow your craft? If so, then the inaugural HackHunterdon Hackathon is calling your name.

The event that takes place on April 28th to 29th at the Feed Mill Station in Flemington New Jersey is a way to network with others and solve real-world problems. There will be cash prizes and other tech-related rewards as well. The three equal partners are sponsoring the event: The Hunterdon County of Commerce, Hunterdon County Economic Development, and Flemington Community Partnership.

Hackathons exist throughout the nation. They started in larger cities, and are usually sponsored by technology communities. They are 24-48 hour sessions where technologists, programmers, coders and software designers come together to move their projects forward or to generate IT solutions.

Technology innovators who come to the event bring ideas for innovative projects, programs, or companies and partner into teams to come up with proposals. They will then be presented at the end of the Hackathon, resulting in cash and other prizes, and the chance to pitch to key investors.

The Hackathon came about, according to the Economic Development Director of Hunterdon County, Marc Saluk, due to the growing sustainability problem in the area. The population in Hunterdon County is aging and there is less population all together. His division just came about last year as the problem was growing. The economy was generating low wage, says Saluk, and it is difficult to live in Hunterdon County with low income.

Now, he is looking to center economic development by the use of technology. The rural community was perfect for the idea, as the hackathon brings out people in the technology community, translating into the HackHunterdon giving them a community back. Saluk says that the Hackathon is a great launch technology initiative long term.

HackHunterdon is looking for developers, designers, and creative technologists who want to work in a competition environment on a team and move projects forward. Those who have skills in the area and are serious about it can apply here. You can also contact them through their Facebook page.
