“It’s a hill – get over it!”  The sixth annual Sourland Spectacular bicycle rally is just around the corner on September 9th.  Serious cyclists from all around the tristate area will challenge themselves on one of four Sourland region routes: 26.9 miles, 35.9 miles, 52.7 miles or 65.4 miles.  The longest of these, the Metric Century, includes a total of 3,275 feet of climbing. This year, the Spectacular committee has added a Family Fun Ride which is almost completely flat!

Event registration is open now at http://www. sourlandspectacular.com/ tickets: $45 adult ($50 at the gate); $25 children 12-16 years; children under 12, free.

All rides begin and end at the Otto Kaufman Center at 356 Skillman Road, Skillman, NJ.  Parking will be available at the Montgomery High School. Riders will choose their own start time between 7am and 10am. Bagels (courtesy of Montgomery Bagel Barn) and beverages (donated by Small World Coffee) will be available at 7am.

Each cyclist will receive a goody bag provided by Hammer Nutrition including Hammer Gel, Endurolytes Fizz, Sourland Cycles 20% coupon for all gear and accessories, and other valuable coupons from Sourland Conservancy business partners and event sponsors.  Participants who buy advance tickets online will also receive a universal silicon smartphone bike mount cell phone holder.

Riders will follow cue sheets that are available online now at http://www. sourlandspectacular.com/ routes/ and at registration.  Temporary arrows will be affixed to the roads, marking every turn.  Each route is marked using a different colored arrow.

Aid stations staffed with volunteers will be set up along the route for riders to rest and revive with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bananas, pretzels, grapes, Hammer HEED Mandarin-Orange drink and Endurolytes capsules, Gatorade, and water.  Bathroom facilities will also be available.

Riders should choose a start time that will allow them to finish between 11am and 1pm to enjoy a delicious Thai Elephant Food Truck or New World Pizza food truck lunch.  For dessert, participants will celebrate with the event’s famous homemade brownie sundae featuring ice cream donated by the Bent Spoon and topped with Sourland Spectacular secret gourmet chocolate sauce.

Lunch, snacks and SAG services are included in the registration fee. Riders will enjoy a delicious lunch from Thai Elephant Food Truck or wood-fired New World Pizza.  For dessert, participants celebrate with the event’s famous homemade brownie sundae featuring ice cream donated by The Bent Spoon and topped with Sourland Spectacular secret gourmet chocolate sauce.

Sourland Cycles’ friendly staff will be on hand at the Otto Kaufman Center to help with rider questions and mechanical issues and pump tires.  In addition, Sourland Cycles will be providing SAG (support and gear) services for the event.  If a rider cannot complete the route for any reason, he or she can call the number on the cue sheet, and a volunteer will bring tools and supplies for minor repairs.  If needed, the SAG volunteer will bring the cyclist and bike back to the Otto Kaufman Center.

After the ride, Sourland Cycles will have their popular electric bikes on hand, as well as some of the new 2018 road bikes for men and women from Giant and Specialized.

Proceeds benefit the Sourland Conservancy, a nonprofit organization dedicated solely to protect, promote and preserve the Sourland Mountain region – 90 square miles of forest, wetlands and grasslands, home to many endangered and threatened plant and animal species, and a critical stopover for migratory birds. Covering parts of seven municipalities and three counties within the heavily developed central corridor of New Jersey, the Sourlands region is also rich in opportunities for human recreation, refuge and renewal, with hiking trails and historic sites.

The Sourland Conservancy would like to thank its business partners The Bent Spoon, Sourland Cycles, The Ryland Inn, Sourland Mountain Spirits, and Kilbourne & Kilbourne for supporting their mission throughout the year.  They would also like to thank event sponsors Hammer Nutrition, Bagel Barn, and Small World Coffee.
