As part of the “Favorite Small Town in Hunterdon County” contest, we’re shining a spotlight on the amazing towns that make up Hunterdon County and some of the fantastic organizations located within them.

Each region offers a distinct downtown district with shopping, dining, and recreational activities just a short walk away. One such place is the Hunterdon County community of Clinton, New Jersey.

When the Clinton post office was established in 1829, it was named for DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New Yorkand the primary impetus behind the then-newly completed Erie Canal.

Clinton was incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 5, 1865, within portions of Clinton, Franklin and Union Townships. Clinton gained full independence from its three parent townships in 1895.

The town is perhaps best known for its two mills which sit on opposite banks of the South Branch Raritan River. The Red Mill, with its historic village, dates back to 1810 with the development of a mill for wool processing. Across the river sits the Stone Mill, home of the Hunterdon Art Museum for Contemporary Craft and Design, located in a former gristmill that had been reconstructed in 1836 and operated continuously until 1936. In 1952, a group of local residents conceived of a plan to convert the historic building into an art museum, which is still in operation today.

The Hunterdon Art Museum (HAM) presents changing exhibitions of contemporary art, craft and design in a 19th century stone mill listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Founded in 1952, the Museum showcases works by internationally recognized and emerging contemporary artists. It also offers a dynamic schedule of art classes and workshops for children and adults, and a popular summer camp program.

Current exhibitions include

  • The Art of Construction
  • Richard Wengenroth: Water to Paper
  • Steve Sitrin: Shape and Surface
  • The HAM Faculty Exhibition

HAM fall classes begin in early Sept. with classes for adults, teens and children ranging from plein air painting to watercolor, glass fusing and ceramics. Learn more here.

River Valley Realty is donating $500 to one local charity representing the winning “small town” and the HAM will be granted the donation if Clinton, New Jersey takes top honors. If you’d like to cast a vote for Clinton as your favorite town in Hunterdon County, you can do so through September 30, 2017.
