Age has its advantages.

For human beings, growing older often means growing wiser, kinder and more serene. For seniors of the feline variety, the years bring a certain sweetness – and a special shot at adoption. Tabby’s Place: a Cat Sanctuary, in Ringoes, NJ, has reduced adoption fees for all cats over ten years of age from $135 to $50.

But don’t think of it as a fire sale on seniors. This is a special gift for those adopters with a heart for older cats. Unlike wild kittens, adult cats aren’t overflowing with exhausting, high-maintenance energy. Much like mature humans, cats of a certain age are comfortable in their fur, and “what you see is what you get” in terms of temperament. That sweet, snuggly soul you meet at the sanctuary will be just as mushy in your home.

Just ask Lauren McGuigan, who adopted 15-year-old Tinkerbell from Tabby’s Place this fall. McGuigan was specifically seeking an older cat, and “Tink”’s quiet, gentle demeanor captured her heart. Gentle Tink allowed McGuigan to hold her and snuggle up to her face on their very first meeting, and so their bond began. Today, McGuigan reports that Tinkerbell is “the perfect companion. She snuggles up in bed with me at night, follows me around my room in the morning, and greets me with her tiny meow when I return home.”

As cats increasingly thrive to age 18 and beyond, with the oldest cat on record having reached an astounding age 38, McGuigan looks forward to loving Tinkerbell for years to come.

Tabby’s Place hopes to make many love connections for its mature cats through this promotion. As a haven for kitties from hopeless situations, Tabby’s Place rescues cats regardless of age. Currently, over 1/3 of Tabby’s Place’s 120 residents are over age ten. But, a decade out of kittenhood, cats like Tinkerbell have oodles of affection to offer.
