The historic Prallsville Mills kicks off its new speaker series at 1 pm on Sunday, June 4 with an exploration of the role of dissent in American politics from our nation’s inception to current times with author Ralph Young.
Young, a Temple University History professor, says that from colonial days to our current turbulent times, dissent shapes our nation. Given the rise in protest and resistance during the last year, a look backwards in time can inform our current conditions.
Young is the author of Dissent: The History of an American Idea, a narrative history of the United States from the standpoint of dissenters and protest movements. The book was a finalist for the 2016 Phi Beta Kappa Ralph Waldo Emerson Award. He is also the editor of Dissent in America: Voices That Shaped a Nation, a compilation of more than 100 documents by American dissenters.
The event is the first in a planned Speaker’s Series at Prallsville Mill. Next up will be an evening of stories that capture the industry, history, and decadence along the Delaware River. Included in the evening will be: Keith Strunk’s observations about Prallsville Mill and Stockton, Edie Sharp’s insights into the Delaware River Byway, and Becky Diamond’s dive into The Thousand Dollar Dinner, a 19th century culinary challenge between Philadelphia restauranteur James Parkinson and the Delmonico family of NY. This event will be on August 27th at 7pm.
The Prallsville Mills complex in Stockton, NJ, is considered a significant example of early American industrial architecture that was included on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
