If giants existed, Jeffrey Meier would have the perfect pair of bright blue cable knit mittens for them.

Meier, owner of the Jeffrey Meier Gallery in Lambertville, is in the midst of a three-month performance art project and the end result is a five-foot pair of mittens.

Why, you ask?

Meier, who is new to the Lambertville scene as of November, said he wanted to introduce the community to his gallery by demonstrating the fun and whimsy he hopes to encapsulate in the Church Street space. And so the “Mittens for Goliath” project was born.

The mittens—and the future performance art projects Meier hopes to host—“embody the spirit of whimsy and craftsmanship that I want to represent the gallery,” Meier said.

Each weekend since mid-January, Judith Jones has been knitting the mittens live in the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Currently, one mitten is completed and displayed in the large front window at the gallery. Jones will finish the second one by March 1, when the public is invited to the gallery for light refreshments and a look at what may be the world’s largest mittens. The celebration will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Meier said he hopes his effort to exhibit the fun and playfulness of performance art will show the public that art doesn’t have to be stuffy, hands-off or always museum-like.

He said he hopes to introduce a piece of performance art each season. As for what the spring holds? “I haven’t found the right piece for spring but I am looking,” he said.

One thing is for sure, though: it will be different and have a sense of humor, he added.

The Jeffrey Meier Gallery is located at 14 Church St, Lambertville.
