As we near the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, we take time to remember those lost locally as well as all 2,973 killed.

Awossagame Grove in Clinton Township is dedicated to the residents of Hunterdon County who were lost on September 11th, 2001. “Awossagame” is the Lenni Lenape word that means “heaven” or “a sacred place.” 20 trees were planted in the grove shortly after the tragedy, but at the time the number of victims had not been confirmed. Later, 16 of the trees were dedicated, one for each county resident lost. Five Arrowwood Viburnum bushes planted in the grove represent the five points of the Pentagon. Four benches along the riverbank symbolize the four planes that were lost that tragic day.
