On Sunday, September 17th, from 1 pm – 5 pm, Woodlands will hold its annual Community Day, offering the public a rare opportunity to visit one of New Jersey’s foremost wildlife rehabilitation facilities. Due to the nature of its work, Woodlands is normally closed to the public except for patient admissions and scheduled education programs.

Community Day is an interactive, fun and educational family day! The afternoon includes self-guided tours, and the Kid’s Den, an interactive area with wildlife focused activities and crafts. Wildlife experts will be on hand to discuss a variety of topics including your wild neighbors, solutions to wildlife concerns, black bears and the state’s threatened and endangered species. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet Woodlands’ resident Sulcata tortoise, Canadian lynx, gray squirrel, Eastern box turtle, diamondback terrapin, and raccoon and discover how these non-releasable education animals benefit Woodlands.

This year’s event features several exciting scheduled presentations to foster an appreciation and understanding of wildlife.

Woodlands presentations will include about Woodlands Wildlife Refuge and the work it does for New Jersey’s wildlife, their public education, and all about how wildlife rehabilitation works. SNAKES-N-SCALES AND TURTLE TALES will be presenting a reptile program which seeks to bring an understanding of many magnificent species and their rescue stories. Zoo Jersey will be on site to present a unique mammal show which will compare and contrast possums and opossums and what makes mammals awesome. These thrilling shows will allow visitors to see these animals up close and learn about their natural habits and habitats.

All activities and refreshments are included in the requested admission donation. Environmental exhibitors include The Raptor Trust, Master Gardeners of Hunterdon County, New Jersey Audubon, Hunterdon County Parks, Wildlife Control Specialists, LLC, Merrill Creek Reservoir New Jersey Nature Conservancy, Patti Kerr the author of Magical Dogs and more! All proceeds benefit Woodlands Wildlife Refuge. Woodlands is a 501c3 charity that receives no state or federal funding and relies completely on donations.

Today, Woodlands, under the direction of Tracy Leaver, cares for more than 1000 animals a year including raccoons, skunks, opossums, woodchucks, rabbits, coyotes, foxes, river otters, beavers, turtles, snakes and porcupines, among others. It is the only facility in New Jersey licensed to care for the state’s endangered bobcat and Timber rattlesnake, and the primary rehabilitation facility for black bears.
