In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Chabad of Hunterdon County’s Teen Network (CTeen) hosted a well-attended gathering to promote and create awareness for diversity and acceptance. The event was organized by the CTeen Leadership Board and spearheaded by their President Kirsten Bashford, a senior at Del-Val High School.
“This has been my dream to educate people on the Holocaust,” said Kirsten, “and now my dream has become my reality.”
Included in the event was an educational presentation, made by Kirsten, highlighting atrocities committed during the Holocaust and what we can do now to avoid them in the future. The event was capped off by the creation of a “Butterfly Train” in commemoration of the 1.5 million children whose lives were lost during the Holocaust. The day after the event over 300 butterflies were cutout and colored by students at Del-Val High School.
“There is a saying, ‘one good deed will bring another good deed’,” said Rabbi Shloime Greene, co-director at CTeen. “We saw that very clearly from this event. Through young leaders getting together for a night of education, they were able to spread awareness and create real action with an entire school.”
Cteen of Hunterdon County is a network of local Jewish teens geared towards providing a platform in which teenagers can learn and experience true leadership—a group run by teens for the teens—and a forum to create community initiatives and do humanitarian work. The group, headed by directors Chana and Shloime Greene, has bi-weekly meetings with social gatherings, and fun educational workshops. CTeen has clubs at many local high-schools and is actively seeking additional schools that may be interested in starting their own clubs.
CTeen’s upcoming events include a Lag Ba’omer BBQ and Bonfire, which will be held on Wednesday, May 25th at 7:00pm, and the Year-end Volunteer Day on Sunday, June 5th.
