College Coaches Train Boys at Free Volleyball Clinics in Flemington

Richard Gary, Head Men’s Volleyball Coach at Vassar, will serve as CJVA guest coach on Aug. 31 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

Central Jersey Volleyball Academy (CJVA) invites area boys entering grades 5 through 12 to sign up for free volleyball clinics on August 29, Aug. 31, Sept. 5 and Sept. 7 featuring guest coaches from East Stroudsburg University, Vassar College and Saint Peter’s University. The free training gives boys the opportunity to learn new skills and prepare for tryouts. These clinics will be held at RAC Sports, 97 River Road in Flemington.

Kevin Rodgers, Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at East Stroudsburg University will be a guest coach at CJVA on Aug. 29 from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. Prior to joining the East Stroudsburg University women’s volleyball program, Rodgers served as the top assistant coach for Bucknell’s women’s volleyball team during the 2016 season. He was previously the head men’s coach at Ramapo College of New Jersey, an assistant women’s coach at FDU-Florham and a head and assistant coach for the volleyball programs at his alma mater, New Jersey City University.

Richard Gary, Head Men’s Volleyball Coach at Vassar, will serve as CJVA guest coach on Aug. 31 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Prior to joining Vassar , Gary spent five years as the head men and women’s volleyball coach at Wells College in Aurora, NY. Before Wells, Gary was the head coach for the Prontos Volleyball Club in Netherlands and an assistant coach for the women’s volleyball program at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY.

Amable Martinez, the head women’s volleyball coach at Saint Peter’s University will guest coach on September 7 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Formerly, Martinez was the men’s volleyball head assistant coach at Stevens Institute of Technology and head coach of the Bloomfield College women’s volleyball team.

In addition to the free clinics, CJVA will also hold a Boys All-Skills Camp from Aug. 21 -24. Encompassing 4 days of intense training designed for players striving to refine their technique for a certain position or skill, the camp exposes them to tactical aspects of the game as they relate to setting, blocking, hitting, passing and defense. Players will be grouped by age and skill level. Cost is $150.

CJVA boys tryouts for 14, 15, and 16u teams will be held on Sunday, Sept 10 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. and Monday, Sept 11 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Tryout for boys 17 and 18u teams will be held on 
Sunday, Sept 10 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. and Monday, Sept 11 from 8:00 -10:00 pm.

“Almost all high schools in the United States have girls’ volleyball teams, however, there are fewer opportunities for boys to learn the sport of volleyball,” says Kym Mottern, CJVA Club Director. “We believe every child should be offered to opportunity to play volleyball and we want to encourage more boys to gain knowledge of the game.”

Central Jersey Volleyball Academy (CJVA), which was founded in 2004, instituted a program for boys in 2013. Last season, CJVA fielded 16 girls teams ages U12 to U18 in Flemington, seven girls team ages U14 to U17 in Summit, and four boys teams ages U15 to U17 in Flemington.
