The summer Olympic games are just around the corner! The Garden State is sending over thirty athletes to the games. While none of the athletics specifically call Hunterdon County home, here are a few nearby and notable athletes to cheer on:

Hometown: Hillsborough, N.J. 

Sport: Handball

Played football and basketball in high school
Awards: USATH College National Championships – 2015 (8th place); 2014 (6th place)

 

Thomas Dethlefs

Sport: Rowing

He got his start rowing for the Lawrenceville School and is an alternate on the men’s rowing team.

 

Lauren Schmetterling

Hometown: Moorestown, N.J.

Sport: Rowing

Lauren began rowing with the Moorestown Rowing Club in 2003 and is currently training in Princeton.

 

Laurie Hernandez

Hometown: Old Bridge,laurie-hernandez_usatsi_8749272 NJ

Sport: Gymnastics

Lauren Hernandez, a 16 year old born in New Brunswick, was named to the 2016 Rio Olympics USA Women’s Gymnastics Team alongside Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian and Gabby Douglas. Lauren is the first Latina since 1984 in the U.S. Olympic gymnastic team and one of the youngest U.S. athletes going to Rio.
