He said “Will you?” offering up a ring with blinding bling. You said “I will,” all giddy and excited. Now begins the road to “I do.” If you’re looking to plan a wedding that’s not to be forgotten in 2019, here are a few trends worth noting.

The Invitations

Vellum over leather-like or metallic paper is in, along with custom-made artistic renderings. For those looking to cut down on paper waste, digital invitations and RSVPs are an acceptable alternative which can include a video of the couple’s magic moments during courtship.

The Dress

Prince Henry and Meghan Markle’s wedding set the stage for classically-styled wedding dresses with simple lines, a haltered back, slanted hemlines or one-shoulder silhouettes. Accessories in vogue this year are bows, sparkles and feathers. Divergent trends include pant suits, crop tops, layered skirt, capes and caplets, according to gowns displayed at Bridal Fashion Week.

Three-piece Suits for Grooms

Traditional tuxedoes are out. According to menswear expert Dominic Trooper from The Wedding Gallery, this year, grooms will be donning tailored three-piece suits that pair different fabrics and patterns together. When the party revs up, the jacket can be tossed and the sleeves rolled up for a “confident and more relaxed look,” said Trooper.

The Venue

Outdoor weddings are still popular. More popular? Bringing the outdoors indoors, using grasses to line aisles and large, earthy floral arrangements as statement decorations. Breweries have replaced wineries as the trendiest wedding venue.  And while barns and lofts are still popular, distilleries and greenhouses are gaining popularity too, according to Martha Stewart Living.

The Flowers

Brilliantly crafted paper flowers or bunches of balloons are replacing elaborate floral displays. For those who choose to go the traditional floral route, single, standout blooms accompanied by nature-inspired elements such as stones or crystals are the way to go this year. Wedding wreaths are replacing bridal bouquets, as they take fewer flowers and are easier to carry.

The Cake

Again, thanks to Prince Henry and Meghan Markle, a focal wedding cake is replacing the dessert tray which has been popular for the past few years. Cakes can range from museum-quality to simple, three-tiered versions with a dramatic, yet basic floral display for effect.

The Rise of Bridesmen and Groomsgirls

Bridesmen, groomsgirls, flower grandmas (rather than flower girls), and best women; the traditional wedding roles are now seen more as a guide than a rule. With it comes a more relaxed style for dressing the wedding party including pant suits for women and suits over tuxedos for men.

The Food

According to WeddingWire, grazing tables are replacing the traditional sit-down dinner. Often, the food is presented as a work of art. Sometimes the food is set up as interactive stations such as tea bars, guacamole bars or popcorn bars. Couples are also using food to tell their story.  They’re choosing cultural dishes that have a personal significance, from ramen appetizers to tacos.

The Send Off

Colorful confetti is replacing rice as the classic send-off thrown by guests. The more confetti color, the more steadfast the marriage, the theory goes.

Eco-conscious and ethical weddings

From wedding dresses that use ethical practices to wedding cakes made of locally sourced ingredients, eco-conscious and ethical wedding options are increasing. It can include sending digital invitations over paper ones and going with smaller or interchangeable floral arrangements, such as a bridal bouquet that also serves as a centerpiece.

Experiential Treats

Sunset cruises, guided nature walks or cocktail mixing classes are replacing guest favors and rehearsal dinners. Ice cream trucks and cupcake makers at the reception are also becoming more mainstream.

The Ambiance

Squid ink, midnight blue, emerald, rich burgundies and copper accents are in—regardless of the season.  Velvet is replacing linen napkins creating a warm, cozy atmosphere for guests.
