As fall settles in to Hunterdon County, shifting temperatures can lead to shifting appetites. Pumpkin, cranberry, thick, aromatic soups and root vegetables replace summer corn, tomatoes and watermelon on restaurant menus. Following is a smattering of selections from Hunterdon Happening List favorites.

The Lambertville Station Restaurant & Inn is a repeat Winner and Finalist on the 2019 Happening List, earning the top spot for Late Night Drinking and Appetizer and Finalist for Outdoor Dining, Brunch, Wine List and Beer Bar. Before the temperatures drop, enjoy lunch by the canal. And in the cooler months, experience the wine cellar with over 50 boutique wines and fireside seating. For fall, Lambertville Station is offering hot comfort foods like French onion soup, lobster & crab bisque and jambalaya; plus other favorites such as meatloaf, roasted rack of lamb and a turkey and brie panini. There are new fall menus for brunch, lunch, dinner and the wine cellar.

If you’re looking for stick-to-your-ribs fare, try the Little York’s homemade pierogies, filled with cheese and sautéed onions or venture out with the white cheddar and pepper jack quinoa balls with garlic sriracha buffalo sauce.  And keep an eye out for seasonal comfort food specials like Connie’s chicken pot pie and harvest lentil soup. The restaurant was voted Hunterdon Happening List Winner for Best Kept Secret.

Note: Chef’s Table will be changing location at the end of October/beginning of November 2019. The final day at East Main Street is October 25. They will reopen in early November at 405 US Highway 22 in Whitehouse Station.

Order up a pot of meatballs or a hearty soup on the chalkboard special. Get your end-of-the-season corn fix with the seared scallops that include local corn, bell peppers, bacon and cream sauce. Crab Norfolk, wild caught salmon with whiskey butter or paprika dusted shrimp and grits are among the seafood favorites that garnered the eatery the Best Seafood title on the Hunterdon Happening List.

The Clinton House

Start out with a roasted beet with bleu cheese and candied nut salad, then move on to the beef Wellington wrapped in phyllo dough with chicken liver pate and mushroom duxelle served  with bordelaise sauce. Or choose from any one of the steak entrees which earned the restaurant the Best Steak designation on the Hunterdon Happening List. Get your pumpkin fix with one of their seasonal desserts like pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin creme brûlée or mini pumpkin pockets fresh from the Clinton House Bakery.
